Relay for Life
Communities around the United States organize events to raise money for the American Cancer Society, including Relay for Life events. Mahomet has hosted this event for many years, rain or shine. There would not have been a Relay for Life in Mahomet this year but a few months ago Amy Craig and Jessie DeHaan stepped up and took charge to create an incredible evening with just 3 short months to plan. With the amazing community support there was a wide variety of prizes for silent auctions, food donated to sell, and time given to get involved in a variety of other ways made this event such a success. The high school kids brought a lot of energy and excitement to the event, which included a lip syncing battle. Fundraising totals are being calculated but early estimates are that this year's event will bring in a total of over $30,000 to donate to the American Cancer Society.
There were many touching moments, including the survivor lap to begin the event. And that's when it hit me. I too, can proudly wear THE purple shirt. I am a 17 year cancer survivor!
It was such a honor to celebrate the cancer survivors that were present, from one gentlemen who got the best news the DAY BEFORE the event to the survivors who have been cancer free for many years.
Below are some pics that capture only a portion of the fun had Saturday evening at the Mahomet-Seymour High School track. If you want to see them all, be sure to check out the full gallery. All the images can be downloaded at no charge, compliments of Sweet Lemonade Photography. :-)
