What to Wear Tips for Women
Women tend to have a bit more wiggle room in terms of the ensembles they can wear. A dress or beautiful sweater in a saturated jewel tone or neutral blouse paired with a smart blazer can all work well.
Whether you opt for a jacket with a feminine cut or a fitted dress, the neckline should be rather simple and conservative.
A modest v-neck as well as crew and boat neck tops are universally flattering because it lengthens the neck and displays the décolleté. Opt for blouses with sleeves. Fine to medium gauge knits work really well too because they introduce textural interest. If you choose to wear a jacket, pair it with a collarless top. This is modern and keeps the neckline simple and sleek. Crisply ironed shirts by themselves frame the face really well.
If you typically wear a jacket to work, bring a couple of jacket choices, but you do not need to wear a jacket to look professional.
Small simple earrings, such as studs or small hoops, are best.
If your signature brand is big jewelry, however, bring it along and we’ll choose the best options for your headshot. Remember: the picture should be about your face, not your jewelry.
Things to Avoid
-
Short sleeves or sleeveless styles (unless you’ve got “buff” arms and want to show them off)
-
Low necklines
-
Busy or trendy patterns or plaids
-
Turtlenecks are almost always a bad idea as they crowd the face.
-
Shiny fabrics — no silk or satin
-
A white shirt/blouse/sweater by itself is a bad idea - it draws attention away from the face. Better to wear white under a jacket or sweater.
-
Standup collars don’t always “behave,” so I suggest women avoid them.
-
Wearing clothes too big or too flowy, without much
shape/structure, often make a person look larger.
-
For a no-jacket casual look, bring various colored blouses - ideally darker than your skin tone.
-
Be stylish and fashionable yet classic. Remember the picture is about your face and not your clothes or jewelry.
